Chateau du Chevalier sits in Cathar Castle County and so offers a historical back drop to your wedding in the South of France.

Guillaume de Plaigne was a Cathar Lord who built the Chateau in the 13th century. It then passed through the hands of the Knights of Malta when it became a military headquarters, or Commandery.

Today, imposing as it still stands, the artist-owner has created a family home with modern comforts and contemporary touches, all within the Chateau's Medieval walls.

The accommodation is shared between the Chateau itself and an independent cottage: the chateau boasting 10 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms and the cottage 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Each bedroom has been beautifully decorated. Thought has gone into furnishings and artwork to create a special environment in which guests can rest. The cottage is very private with its own driveway and gates.

Alongside the bedrooms sit 4 reception rooms including the Knights Hall on the first floor, an 86m2 reception room with a splendid floor to ceiling fire place, chandeliers and library area. It is a magical space for an autumn or winter wedding ceremony (not available for use outside weddings/events).

Leading out of the entrance hall, two sets of stairs lead down to the front of the Chateau and onto the lawns.

Prices quoted are inclusive of the wedding fee for up to 150 guests, and for both chateau and cottage accommodation. 3 night wedding packages are also available. A Magnificent Chateau to rent in the South of France

The accommodation at Chateau du Chevalier comprises the Chateau itself and an independent cottage, sleeping up to 29 guests in the 2 properties.

The Chateau

Ground Floor

A large entrance hall, complete with wooden floors and panelling, takes you past an independent WC through to a hallway from which leads the pretty summer drawing room of 34m2 with double doors leading onto the lawns. 

The Woad Dining room, 44m2, is adorned with murals and tapestries with a table to sit 20 people. It has a working fireplace. A door takes you into the kitchen, with a working fireplace and very well equipped with 2 ovens and 2 dishwashers. From the kitchen there are stairs leading to the garden.

The Knights' Hall - an 86m2 with a dominating floor to ceiling 16th century fire place and bookcases all around. This magnificent hall can seat up to 130 people (not available for use outside weddings/events).

The Billiard Room 45m2 leads off the Knights' hall and can accommodate 3 or 4 extra tables for events. An Upstairs Dining room lies off the Knights' Hall. Off this dining room there are back stairs, perfect for caterers to use.

A small chapel can be found in the tower.

The Chateau and Cottage sit in 10 acres of parkland. With its trees and shrubs, lawns and avenues, it offers the freedom and space to choose the perfect place in which to celebrate a wedding, a gathering of friends or a family event. There is plenty of space for a marquee.

To the side of the Chateau, the swimming pool, 10m x 6m and 1.6m deep, sits on the manicured lawns which spill over into the fields beyond. There is a little stream that runs through the grounds.

There is parking for 50 cars.

Mirepoix, a lovely town with a quintessential South of France market held on every Monday and Thursday.

The famed city of Carcassonne is approximately 50kms away linking the Cathar history to Chateau du Chevalier. As an all year round destination, it really does have so much to offer visitors, old and young! Carcassonne has annual arts and music festivals and the firework displays, especially on the 14th July, Bastille day, are incredible.

The Pyrenees Ariegeoises Natural Regional Park to walk, cycle, horse ride and take in the flora and fauna of the countryside - approx 80km

A Wedding Chateau in the South of France

The Chateau sits in lovely countryside in the Aude department of the Languedoc.

Just 6km away you will find the essential boulangerie, grocers, café-bar, and pharmacy.

The historical, and very pretty of Mirepoix is approximately 16km from the Chateau and has a selection of shops, bars and restaurants. The market is on a Monday and Thursday morning. Two restaurants worth noting are Le Clos des Oliviers and L'Autre Jardin. The best restuarant in the area is Bassas in Pamiers
