Nearby Attractions & Activities

Lots to explore from this South of France Holiday Rental

The medieval village of Gruissan is just south of Narbonne, built in a circlulade fashion, rather like a snail’s shell, around the ancient ruins of the Tour Barberousse - a fortified outpost dating from 800 AD.

With its narrow streets and old houses, tiny shops and family run restaurants it is classed as one of the most beautiful in France and well known for its fishing and wine industries and for its 1300 beach chalets built on stilts and immortalised in the film “Betty Blue” (“37.2° le matin”).

On the 28th and 29th June the village reverts back to its ancient past to honour the patron saint of fishing, Saint Pierre. A statue of the saint is paraded around the village and then, after Mass is celebrated at the church, the procession winds down to the shore and flower wreaths are thrown into the sea in memory of those who lost their lives to it.
Here, you will also find a larger modern beach resort with lots of companies offering water based sports and in particular a windsurfing school catering for adults as well as children.

The Marina - one of the Mediterranean's major pleasure boat harbours. Admire the yachts belonging to rich and famous, learn to sail or take a trip to Port-la-Nouvelle or the bird sanctuary to see the pink flamingos.

Close by Narbonne - founded around 600 BC by the Romans, it boasts a flamboyant cathedral and Episcopal Palace. Excellent restaurants and one of the most splendid markets.

Espace de Liberte in Narbonne offers bowling, indoor and outdoor pools, ice skating and cafeteria/restaurant.

Abbaye de Fontfroide approx 10 km built by the powerful Bishops of Narbonne with a beautifully restored 11th century cloister, a wonderful garden and a gourmet restaurant.

Bages approx 6km. Lovely fishing village on the shores of the Narbonne 'etang' (lagoon). Several very good seafood restaurants, as well as a few art shops/galleries. Great windsurfing on the etang in early spring and late autumn (some speed records have been set here).

Mediterranean beaches - Leucat, Vendres plages - sandy beaches offering plenty of water sports opportunities - apprx 15 to 20 minutes by car.

Sigean approx 24km = Wildlife Safari park

Port-la-Nouvelle approx 28km - Superb sandy beaches.

Carcassonne approx 75km - Largest fortified medieval town in Europe - a UNESCO site.

Beziers approx 45km - Major market town, noted for its bull-fight 'Feria' in August.

Perpignan approx 80km - Palace of kings of Mallorca.

Montpellier approx 115km - Large university town.

Nimes approx 155km - Roman temple and arena

The Cathar castles (Queribus and Peyrepetuse to name but 2) – the people in this area were known as the Cathars and broke away from the Roman Catholic Church in the 10th Century. They appointed a kind man in each village to look after the sick and work their crops instead of a priest. The pope was not too impressed and sent Simon de Montfort to sort them out (the infamous Spanish inquisition). Consequently, the Cathars built themselves castles spectacularly perched on the top of hills and mountains for their defence.

The little yellow train – a great day out with spectacular views taking you into the Natural Park of the Catalan Pyrenees. The train runs in the summer from Vernet-les-Bains to Latour-de-Carol
